Albuquerque: Between 2001 to 2009, 11 women and girls were murdered. Their bodies were found on West Mesa in 2009. Thank you to People Exchanging Power (PEP) for bringing these names to the attention of SWOP. In 2009 PEP held a December 17 candle lighting ceremony at NM AIDS Services in Albuquerque to honor these women and girls.
- Cinnamon Elks, went missing in August 2004
- Monica Candelaria, missing since May 2003, her mother Isabel looked for her for nearly 6 years
- Victoria Chavez, disappeared in 2005, murdered at age 24 and mourned by her family
- Virginia Ann Cloven, murdered at age 22, reported missing in 2004
- Syllannia Edwards, reported missing in 2003 at 15 years old
- Doreen Marquez, mother of two daughters
- Julie Nieto, friend of Victoria Chavez and Cinnamon Elks, reported missing in 2004
- Veronica Romero, her daughter said she went missing on St Valentine’s Day
- Evelyn Salazar, her nickname was Angel
- Michelle Valdez, was five months pregnant when she was murdered in 2004
- Jamie Barela, the last victim found on West Mesa to be identified. She was 15 years old when she disappeared in April 2004. RIP.
